Mario Prassinos was born in Constantinople in 1916. He moved to France in 1932 with his family.

He became interested in the world of art and particularly in the surrealist movement thanks to his sister, who worked for the magazine Le Minotaure from 1934 onwards. In 1938 he had his first personal exhibition in Paris, at the Galerie Billiet Vorms. In 1939, he volunteered to go to the front.

After the war, from 1942 to 1950, Mario Prassinos collaborated with Editions N.R.F., for whom he illustrated texts by Rimbaud, Apollinaire, Sartre, Queneau and Poe. He was made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 1961. Mario Prassinos exhibited regularly at the Galerie de France in Paris from 1953 to 1976. He made more than 150 tapestry cartoons (from 1952 to 1985) woven in Aubusson, Les Gobelins and Beauvais, and exhibited at the Galerie La Demeure. In 1966, Mario Prassinos was made Knight of the Legion of Honour and then Officer of the Arts and Letters in 1981.
