HIGH ART TAPESTRY - POINT DE VUE

” Specialising in the art of weavers since 1920, the Galerie Chevalier has often made us dream. Four generations have succeeded one anotheŕ at its head, leaving their mark on major French collections, museums and foundations from all over the world. Tapestries from Flanders and French manufactures from the 16th to 15th centuries, European and Oriental carpets and archaeological textiles make up the catalogue for this sale of part of their collection. One of the jewels in the crown is a 16th-century tapestry, attributed to Brussels, entitled Mille-fleurs ornée de l’Allégorie de la Charité́. Finely woven and meticulous, with precious metal threads, it offers us a real exploration. But we are dazzled by another Brussels tapestry, depicting America, made after a model by Lodewijk van Schoor (1666-1726). It is part of the Continents tapestry, which includes Europe, Africa and Asia. Baroque, sensual and colorful, this tapestry, in which the sea breeze is almost perceptible, is as rich as a painting.”
