French tapestry, probably Paris
Woven in wool and silk (warp in wool, weft in wool and silk)
17th century
The border imitating a frame is the same border that appears on the tapestries of The History of Constantine after Rubens, preserved in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and which were woven in the Parisian workshops before the creation of the Royal Gobelins Manufacture. It is interesting to note that the border imitating a frame is rather characteristic of the 18th century, but one finds them already, although very rare, in the second half of the 17th.
