Brussels Tapestry

Woven in wool and silk (warp in wool, weft in wool and silk)

Second half of the 17th century

The scene is probably one of the many battles of the great Cyrus; the tapestry was once paired with another scene positively identified as a scene from the History of Cyrus.

Many soldiers enliven the scene. The battle is fierce and takes place on land and sea, while in the distance a burning city can be seen. The tapestry is set in a beautiful, wide compartmented border, decorated with allegorical figures and small scenes in medallions.
